Spartacus Gods of the Arena Ending Explained?

Ok, so i just finished watching it and i have a question about the
ending, after the battle and the goodbyes by the other ppl cause that
other guy won, at the very ending you see the leader of the house ans
his wife dead(or dying) on the floor. i dont get it at all and its
been bugging me. what happened!? and i only watched the last 2
episodes of gods of the arena and none from blood and sand.
